More Than Books: The Loussac Library Is Anchorage's Winter Living Room

The Z.J. Loussac Library and its neighborhood branches function as warming centers, job centers, kids' classrooms and early-voting sites. Inside the institution Anchorage leans on hardest.

More Than Books: The Loussac Library Is Anchorage's Winter Living Room (Anchorage Northern News)

On a dark November afternoon, the warmest public room in Anchorage might be the Z.J. Loussac Library in Midtown. The flagship of the Anchorage Public Library system, the Loussac is part lending library, part community center, part refuge — an institution that functions, in winter, as the city's shared living room.

The system's reach is broader than the flagship. Neighborhood libraries — Mountain View, Muldoon, Dimond, Gerrish (Girdwood) and Chugiak-Eagle River — anchor their corners of the Municipality, offering children's storytimes, computer and printing access, meeting rooms, and the everyday infrastructure of civic life: job applications filed, tax forms printed, homework finished. Library cards are free to residents, and the system's digital collections lend e-books and audiobooks around the clock.

The library's civic role is literal as well as figurative: Anchorage Public Library locations serve as early and absentee voting sites during election season, and as warming and information centers during cold snaps and emergencies. Librarians are, in practice, among the city's front-line public servants — the people residents ask when they don't know which agency handles a problem.

The system also holds one of the state's great treasures: the Alaska Collection at the Loussac preserves the region's history — photographs, maps, newspapers and the Alaska Medical Library's archives — and its staff field questions from researchers around the world. For a city barely a century old, the memory work matters.

This newsroom's library coverage will be practical before it is anything else: hours, programs, closures, budget fights at the Assembly, and the small services — passport hours, notary days, seed libraries, story times — that residents actually plan their weeks around. The public library is one of the last institutions that serves everyone who walks in. We intend to cover it like it matters, because in Anchorage it plainly does.
